This Christmas, Just Say "No" to Macy's

I was downtown a couple of weeks ago and actually felt real physical pain and a wave of nausea to see those Macy's signs at the Marshall Field's State Street store. I was thinking, that due to the Wilmette boycott of Macy's, I wouldn't buy anything, but at least I could go over to the store formerly known as Marshall Field's and take a look around. But I couldn't bring myself to do it and continued down the street.

Proud Chicagoans! Continue your Macy's boycott! You know it is the right thing to do. Chicago shops at Marshall Field's, not Macy's. Macy's is New York. This is Chicago. Just say NO to Macy's.

The problem is not who owns the store, the problem is what the store is named. Shop elsewhere!

I heard a radio story on how sales at Macy's are suffering. Maybe sooner-or-later Macy's will get the point and restore the Marshall Field name.

Yeah, at least for the downtown flagship store. It's historic, as I understand it, the first department store in the world.

They think name recognition means the same thing to everyone, but obviously it means different things to different people.

Thanks for your kind words over a Prague Twin. I promise not to pop any pills, and I'm trying to keep alcohol down to a minimum but cold turkey is still too hard to face.

I hear what you are saying though.

Sorry for the off topic comment, but at least it isn't spam! (see above)

Macy's took down Filenes in the Boston area. Filenes was affectionately known as "flea'enes".

Hi, all you real people, and thanks for stopping by. There was a lot of spam here--beware bloggers if you put Christmas in a blog post title! Anne, you need to read "Give the Lady What She Wants," a book probably available at the Library. It's the history of Marshall Field's. Marshall Field revolutionized retail practices of his day. He was a consumer advocate in the age of "caveat emptor," and built a fortune doing so.

Prague Twin, I wish you the best of luck on your healthier lifestyle. For many people, Marshall Field's and Chicago were synonymous. It's a matter of civic pride for many.

Copy Editor, I was totally unaware of Macy's involvement with Filene's--thanks for the info.
